CoastAdapt

Getting started

CoastAdapt is designed for anyone with an interest in Australia’s coast, climate change and sea-level rise, and how we can respond. Here we suggest some potential routes through CoastAdapt depending on what questions you might ask or what sort of organisation you're from.

CoastAdapt provides information, guidance and support on coastal adaptation for everyone, including householders, infrastructure operators, small to large businesses, and government at all levels.
CoastAdapt contains a wealth of information, tools, templates and checklists. Finding your way around can be daunting, at least for the first few visits. Here are some places to start. Once you have visited a few times, you’ll be able to find your way around easily.
Here are a few links to helpful information in CoastAdapt, and things you may be looking for.

Every CoastAdapt user is different. We have prepared eight profiles that may help you find what you need:
Questions you are likely to ask (click to dropdown)

  1. Visit Sea Level Rise and You for information on future sea level rise and inundation for your local area, and how to use these graphs, tables and maps
  2. Learn about how Australia’s climate will change in the future
  3. Understand more about how climate change and sea level rise are expected to impact the coast
  4. Understand more about impacts on different sectors

  1. More information about extreme weather events is available at ‘Practical Knowledge for Adaptation’
  2. The causes of climate change and sea level rise are discussed here
  3. You can find out more about the extreme storms that affect Australia and their impacts

  1. As a first step, you need to identify your risk. CoastAdapt has two tools to help you do this. The first, Shoreline Explorer, looks at present-day vulnerability and erodibility of the coast. The second, Sea-level Rise and You, looks at future sea-level rise and inundation
  2. You can then do a first-pass risk assessment to see if you need to take further action.
